Dermaplaning Breakout: Why It Happens and What to Do
Some people get a few bumps after dermaplaning. They are often mild and short-lived, but not always purging. Here’s how to tell the difference and what to expect.
Can dermaplaning cause a breakout?
Yes, but not the way you think. Dermaplaning removes the outermost layer of dead skin cells and fine hair. Sometimes a few bumps appear afterward. This may be congestion that was already forming under the surface coming up faster, or mild irritation. Breakouts can also come from irritation, bacteria or pore-clogging products used right after.
Many people see smoother, brighter skin right away. If a few small bumps show up in the first week, they are often mild and clear on their own.
What purging looks like
Purging shows up in the areas where you usually get congestion. You might see small whiteheads or closed comedones that surface and resolve within a few days. Purging does not cause painful cysts or spread to areas where you never break out.
If the bumps are tender, inflamed or last more than a week, talk to a dermatologist. That may be irritation or an infection, not purging.

What causes purging after dermaplaning
Dermaplaning physically exfoliates the skin. That acceleration can bring blocked pores to the surface faster than they would clear on their own. If you had congestion building under the skin, you might see it emerge in the days after your treatment. It is usually temporary.
Purging is most common for people with oily or acne-prone skin, or for anyone using active ingredients like retinol or acids. Combining manual and chemical exfoliation can also irritate the skin.
How to prevent a breakout
A few steps keep your skin calm:
- Choose a clean studio with a licensed esthetician who uses sterile, single-use blades.
- Skip heavy creams, oils or makeup for 24 hours after your treatment.
- Avoid touching your face.
- Use a gentle, hydrating moisturizer and sunscreen.
- Do not layer strong actives (retinol, acids, vitamin C) for two to three days.
If you are prone to breakouts, let your esthetician know. They may adjust your aftercare or recommend a different exfoliation method.
What dermaplaning at KRIDO looks like
At KRIDO, dermaplaning is part of the Dermaplaning Facial. We remove dead skin cells and vellus hair, then use Circadia products chosen for your skin. Every facial includes red light therapy, which research suggests may support collagen, and lymphatic drainage massage, which can temporarily reduce puffiness.
Your esthetician assesses your skin first and walks you through what to expect. If you have active acne or inflamed skin, we may recommend a different facial until your skin has calmed.
Many clients notice smoother texture and brighter tone right away, and makeup often glides on more evenly.
I had the absolute best experience at Krido Wellness!! I went in for a dermaplane and from the moment I walked in, I was welcomed with open arms. I sat down with the owner, Kristina and she took the time to discuss my current skincare routine, what I’m struggling with and my goals. My aesthetician Amber was incredible!! She is so knowledgable and friendly and was so thorough with my treatment. I literally couldn’t believe my skin afterward - had to do a double take in the mirror lol it was GLOWING, rejuvenated and felt amazing.

Other options for exfoliation
If you are worried about purging, ask your esthetician about microdermabrasion. It uses fine crystals or a diamond tip to buff away dead skin. Results are mild and temporary.
Chemical peels work deeper and can be adjusted for your skin type. They may cause more obvious peeling, and some are designed for acne-prone skin. Talk to your esthetician about what suits your goals.
If you have active cystic acne or a skin infection, hold off on any exfoliation until you see a dermatologist.
When to book your next session
We generally recommend a facial every four to six weeks, which aligns with the skin’s natural renewal cycle.
Your esthetician will recommend a schedule based on your skin type and how your skin responds.
What to do if you break out
If small bumps show up in the first few days, leave them alone. Do not pick or use harsh treatments. Stick to gentle cleansing, a light moisturizer and sunscreen. Most purging clears within a week.
If you see painful cysts, redness that spreads, or bumps that last more than 10 days, call your esthetician or see a dermatologist. That is not normal purging.

Frequently asked questions
Is a breakout after dermaplaning normal?
It can happen. A few mild bumps in the first week may be existing congestion surfacing faster, or mild irritation. They usually clear on their own. Painful or spreading breakouts are not normal and need a professional to look at.
How long does purging last after dermaplaning?
Purging usually clears within five to seven days. If bumps last longer than 10 days or feel inflamed, talk to your esthetician or a dermatologist.
Should I avoid dermaplaning if I have acne?
If you have active cystic acne or inflamed skin, wait until it calms down. Dermaplaning may suit skin with mild congestion, but your esthetician will assess your skin first.
Can I wear makeup after dermaplaning?
Wait 24 hours. Your skin is more sensitive right after treatment, and makeup can clog freshly exfoliated pores. After the first day, makeup usually goes on smoother than before.
What should I put on my skin after dermaplaning?
Use a gentle cleanser, a light hydrating moisturizer and sunscreen. Avoid retinol, acids, vitamin C and heavy oils for two to three days. Your esthetician will give you specific aftercare.
