Is CoolSculpting Safe? What the Research Says

CoolSculpting is FDA-cleared for fat reduction. Research shows it is generally safe, though side effects and rare complications can occur. Here’s what you need to know.

Is CoolSculpting Safe?

CoolSculpting is FDA-cleared for fat reduction and is backed by systematic reviews and clinical trials. For most people, it is safe when performed correctly. Common side effects include temporary numbness, redness, swelling and bruising. Serious complications are rare but can happen.

The treatment uses controlled cooling to freeze fat cells under the skin. The body then clears those cells over weeks to months. It is not surgery, and there is little or no downtime.

What the Research Shows

CoolSculpting, also called cryolipolysis, has been studied in peer-reviewed research. A 2025 meta-analysis and earlier reviews show it reduces fat layer thickness in treated areas. Results are measurable by ultrasound and caliper.

The FDA cleared CoolSculpting in 2010. That means the agency found it comparable to devices already on the market and allows it to be marketed for fat reduction.

Common Side Effects

Most people experience temporary effects at the treatment site:

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Firmness
  • Mild cramping or aching

These typically resolve within a few days to a few weeks.

Rare but Serious Risks

A small number of people develop paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH). Instead of shrinking, the fat in the treated area grows larger and firmer. PAH is rare, but estimates vary between studies, and some suggest it is more common than first reported. It does not go away on its own and may require liposuction to correct.

Other rare complications include severe pain, skin damage, or prolonged numbness.

Who Should Not Get CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting is not safe for everyone. You should not have it if you have:

  • Cold agglutinin disease
  • Cryoglobulinemia
  • Paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria
  • Raynaud’s disease or other cold sensitivity disorders
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Active skin infections or open wounds in the treatment area

Talk to a medical provider if you have any health conditions or take medications that affect circulation or healing.

CoolSculpting vs. Other Fat Reduction Options

How does CoolSculpting compare to other treatments?

TreatmentHow It WorksDowntimeResults
CoolSculptingControlled cooling with suction, 35 to 60 minutes per areaMinimal, temporary side effectsGradual over 2 to 4 months
LiposuctionSurgical fat removalSeveral days to weeksImmediate, permanent from treated area
KybellaInjectable drug (medical provider only)Swelling, possible downtimeGradual over weeks, FDA-approved for under chin only
Cryo Body Sculpting (KRIDO)Short alternating hot and cold, no suctionNone0.5 to 1 inch on average in the first session, results vary

CoolSculpting is backed by more clinical research than most non-invasive options. Evidence for newer devices is often limited.

What KRIDO Offers Instead

KRIDO Wellness offers Cryo Body Sculpting, a different approach to reducing stubborn fat and tightening skin. It uses short cycles of controlled cooling, not the sustained freeze of CoolSculpting. There is no suction and no downtime.

Each session includes three steps: the cryo treatment, red light therapy, and manual lymphatic drainage. We measure your progress in inches at every visit, so you can see the change in numbers.

Cryo Body Sculpting is designed for people who want to refine shape in areas that don’t respond to diet or exercise. It is not weight loss. Most clients see their best results over five to ten sessions.

Evidence for this device is limited. In a small study sponsored by the maker, ultrasound showed fat thickness dropped by about 19 percent on average after a course of treatment. Results vary. Many clients notice smoother, firmer-looking skin, and on average clients lose 0.5 to 1 inch in the first session.

After debating for a few years to book a treatment like abdominal cryotherapy, I am so unbelievably happy that I chose KRIDO and Amber! She is so informational, trustworthy and talented. My results are everything I hoped for & I will absolutely be back for more.

What to Expect at KRIDO

Your first visit starts with a consultation with one of our estheticians who performs this treatment. We take measurements, talk about your goals, and build a plan.

Each session takes about an hour. You feel alternating warmth and cold. Most clients find it comfortable and relaxing. You can return to your day right after.

We track your progress with measurements at every session. Body sculpting works best over a series. Single sessions start at $299. Packages of five or ten lower the price per session.

KRIDO Wellness is awesome. I’d recommend them for facials, fat reduction/skin tightening for your body or face, and even permanent make up. Frequently asked questions

Is CoolSculpting FDA-approved?

CoolSculpting is FDA-cleared, not FDA-approved. Cleared means the FDA found it comparable to devices already on the market and allows it to be marketed for fat reduction. It is not a drug or high-risk medical device requiring full approval.

What is paradoxical adipose hyperplasia?

PAH is a rare complication where fat in the treated area grows larger and firmer instead of shrinking. It is rare, though estimates vary between studies, and it may require liposuction to correct.

Does CoolSculpting hurt?

Most people feel intense cold, pulling from the suction, and numbness during treatment. Afterward, you may have aching, cramping, or tenderness for a few days. Pain is usually mild and temporary.

How is Cryo Body Sculpting different from CoolSculpting?

Cryo Body Sculpting uses short cycles of alternating warmth and cold with no suction. CoolSculpting uses sustained controlled cooling with suction for 35 to 60 minutes per area. They are different technologies, and research for CoolSculpting does not apply to Cryo Body Sculpting.

Can I get body sculpting if I have a medical condition?

It depends on the condition. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, cold sensitivity disorders, cardiovascular conditions, uncontrolled diabetes, and active skin infections may make treatment unsuitable. The team reviews your health history at your consultation and will let you know if treatment is a good fit.
