Microdermabrasion Contraindications: Who Should Not Get This Treatment
Microdermabrasion is a gentle exfoliating facial that removes dead skin cells to reveal brighter, smoother skin. But it is not right for everyone.
Who should not get microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is generally safe for most people. It works by gently buffing away the outermost layer of dead skin cells to improve texture and tone. But certain conditions mean you should skip it or wait until your skin is ready.
You should not get microdermabrasion if you have active acne with open sores or cysts, rosacea with inflamed or broken skin, eczema or psoriasis, active cold sores, open wounds, sunburn, or a recent chemical peel. If you are on isotretinoin (Accutane) or have used it in the past six months, microdermabrasion can cause irritation or slow healing. If you have had facial surgery or laser treatments recently, your skin needs time to recover before any exfoliation.
KRIDO’s terms list pregnancy and breastfeeding among conditions that may make a treatment inappropriate, so talk to your doctor first. If you have diabetes, your skin may heal more slowly, so talk to your doctor first. If you are prone to keloid scars or have very thin or fragile skin, mechanical exfoliation may not be the safest choice.
What happens if you get microdermabrasion when you should not?
If your skin is inflamed, broken or healing, microdermabrasion can make it worse. It can spread bacteria from active acne, irritate rosacea or eczema, delay wound healing, or cause hyperpigmentation if your skin is already compromised. The treatment itself is gentle, but it still removes surface layers, and that is a problem if the barrier is already damaged.
If you are not sure whether microdermabrasion is safe for you, the honest answer is to wait and ask. Your doctor or a licensed esthetician can review your health history and tell you whether your skin is ready.

Microdermabrasion at KRIDO Wellness
KRIDO offers a Microdermabrasion Facial for clients who want to improve skin texture, tone and overall glow with a non-invasive, refreshing treatment. Every facial at KRIDO is built on Circadia professional skincare and includes red light therapy and lymphatic drainage massage, both designed to support circulation and skin health.
Before your first visit, you complete a short intake form. That is where contraindications are reviewed. If microdermabrasion is not the right fit right now, the team can recommend a gentler option, like the Express Facial or Anti-Aging Facial, or suggest waiting until your skin is ready.
The Microdermabrasion Facial is $150. It is performed by one of KRIDO’s licensed estheticians, each with 30 years of esthetics experience. Results are immediate but temporary: smoother texture, brighter tone and a refreshed look. For optimal skin health, facials are generally recommended every four to six weeks.
I had the absolute best experience at Krido Wellness!! I went in for a dermaplane and from the moment I walked in, I was welcomed with open arms. I sat down with the owner, Kristina and she took the time to discuss my current skincare routine, what I’m struggling with and my goals. You could tell she really has such a passion for what she does and after learning more about her story, it was clear that her mission is to help people look and feel their best. The spa itself is very clean, professional, and has a calming atmosphere so you can truly relax. My aesthetician Amber was incredible!! She is so knowledgable and friendly and was so thorough with my treatment. She wasn’t pushing products on me, she just really wanted me to have the best possible experience. I literally couldn’t believe my skin afterward - had to do a double take in the mirror lol it was GLOWING, rejuvenated and felt amazing.

What to do if you have a contraindication
If you have one of the conditions listed above, the safest path is to wait until it clears or heals. For acne, work with a dermatologist or esthetician to calm active breakouts first. For eczema, rosacea or sunburn, wait until your skin barrier is intact. If you are on isotretinoin, ask your dermatologist when your skin is ready; many providers suggest waiting at least six months after your last dose.
If you are not sure, book a skin consultation at KRIDO. The consultation is paired with a facial you choose, and the esthetician will read your skin and recommend what is safe and effective for you now.
Other facial options at KRIDO
If microdermabrasion is not right for you, KRIDO offers a full range of Circadia facials. The Anti-Aging Facial, Rosacea & Acne Facial, Gentle Facial, and Vitamin Infusion Facial are all designed to support skin health without mechanical exfoliation. For clients with sensitive or inflamed skin, the Gentle Facial or Rosacea & Acne Facial may be the better starting point.
Every facial includes red light therapy and lymphatic drainage. Research suggests red light may support collagen, and lymphatic drainage can temporarily reduce puffiness.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get microdermabrasion if I have rosacea?
Not if your rosacea is active or inflamed. Microdermabrasion can irritate red, broken or sensitive skin. If your rosacea is calm, a gentle facial may be a safer option. The KRIDO team reviews your skin at the consultation and recommends what is appropriate.
Can I get microdermabrasion while pregnant?
Talk to your doctor first. KRIDO’s terms list pregnancy and breastfeeding among conditions that may make a treatment inappropriate, and your skin may be more sensitive during pregnancy. The team reviews your health history at the consultation.
How long after Accutane can I get microdermabrasion?
Many providers suggest waiting at least six months after your last dose of isotretinoin. It can make skin more fragile and slow healing, so exfoliating treatments can cause irritation. Your dermatologist can confirm when your skin is ready.
Can I get microdermabrasion if I have active acne?
Not if you have open sores or cysts. Microdermabrasion can spread bacteria and make breakouts worse. If you have mild congestion or blackheads, the KRIDO team may recommend a different facial, like the Rosacea & Acne Facial, which is designed to reduce bacteria and calm the skin.
What happens at the consultation?
You meet with one of KRIDO’s licensed estheticians. They assess your skin, review any contraindications, and recommend the facial that fits your goals and your skin’s current condition. The consultation is paired with the facial you choose, so you leave with a treatment done, not just a plan.
