Dermaplaning Cons: What to Know Before You Book
Dermaplaning delivers smooth, bright skin instantly, but the results don’t last. Here’s what to know about the downsides before you book.
Dermaplaning Cons: What to Know Before You Book
Dermaplaning removes dead skin cells and fine vellus hair (peach fuzz) from the surface of your face with a surgical blade. The result is instant smoothness, brighter skin and better makeup application. But the effects are temporary, and the treatment isn’t right for everyone. Here’s what you should know about the drawbacks before you decide.
The Results Don’t Last
Dermaplaning exfoliates the outermost layer of skin. That layer rebuilds in a few weeks, so the smooth, bright effect fades. Most people see results for two to four weeks. If you want to maintain that look, you’ll need to come back regularly.
The hair grows back at the same rate and texture it had before. The idea that shaving makes hair grow back thicker or darker is a myth. The follicle isn’t changed. But you may notice the regrowth more because the blunt edge of a shaved hair feels coarser than a natural tapered tip.
It’s Not for Active Breakouts or Inflamed Skin
Dermaplaning works well on smooth, healthy skin. If you have active acne, open breakouts, rosacea flare-ups, eczema or any kind of skin infection, the blade can spread bacteria, irritate the skin further or damage healing tissue. Wait until your skin has calmed down.
Sunburn, windburn, recent chemical peels and compromised skin barriers are also reasons to skip dermaplaning until your skin recovers.
You May See Redness or Sensitivity Right After
Most people tolerate dermaplaning well, but some see temporary redness or feel a mild tingle for a few hours afterward. Your skin may also be more sensitive to the sun, wind and active ingredients like retinol or acids for a day or two. Use sunscreen, skip harsh products and keep your routine gentle for 24 to 48 hours.
If you have very sensitive skin, a history of allergic reactions or conditions like rosacea, talk with your esthetician first. A patch test or a gentler exfoliation method may be a better fit.
It Requires Regular Maintenance
Because the results are temporary, dermaplaning becomes part of an ongoing skincare routine rather than a one-time fix. For people who want consistent smoothness and glow, that means booking every few weeks. The cost and time add up, so it’s worth thinking about whether that rhythm works for you.
Not a Solution for Deep Lines, Scars or Pigmentation
Dermaplaning removes surface buildup and hair. It does not address deeper concerns like acne scars, melasma, deep wrinkles or loss of firmness. For those, you may need treatments that work below the surface, like microneedling, chemical peels or laser therapy. Your esthetician can help you understand which approach fits your goals.
Alternatives to Consider
If dermaplaning doesn’t feel right for your skin or your routine, you have options:
- Microdermabrasion: mechanical exfoliation that polishes the skin without a blade. Good for texture and tone, also temporary.
- Chemical peels: acids dissolve dead skin and can address pigmentation and fine lines. Downtime depends on the strength.
- Microneedling: creates controlled micro-injuries to stimulate collagen. Takes several sessions and has a longer recovery, but results build over time.
- Enzyme facials: gentler exfoliation using fruit enzymes. Works well for sensitive skin.
If you’re not sure which treatment fits, a consultation helps you sort it out.
How KRIDO Approaches Dermaplaning
At KRIDO Wellness, dermaplaning is offered as a standalone facial or added to other treatments when it fits your skin and your goals. Each dermaplaning facial includes red light therapy and lymphatic drainage massage. Research suggests red light may support collagen, and lymphatic drainage can temporarily reduce puffiness.
Your esthetician will assess your skin at your consultation to make sure dermaplaning is appropriate. If your skin is inflamed, sunburned or actively breaking out, they’ll recommend waiting or suggest a different approach.
What a Visit Looks Like
You start with a consultation. Your esthetician reads your skin, asks about your routine and your concerns, and confirms that dermaplaning is a good fit. If it is, they’ll do the treatment that same visit.
The esthetician cleanses your skin, then uses a sterile surgical blade at a 45-degree angle to gently remove dead cells and vellus hair. Most people find it comfortable and even relaxing.
After dermaplaning, your esthetician uses Circadia products chosen for your skin. Then you finish with red light therapy and a brief lymphatic drainage massage.
Many clients notice smoother, brighter skin right away. Makeup glides on more evenly. The glow lasts two to four weeks, depending on your skin type and how fast your skin turns over.
How Often You’ll Need It
We generally recommend a facial every four to six weeks to maintain results. Your esthetician will recommend a schedule based on your skin’s response and your goals.
Cost
The dermaplaning facial at KRIDO is $150. That includes the dermaplaning, Circadia professional skincare, red light therapy and lymphatic drainage.

What Clients Say
I had the absolute best experience at Krido Wellness!! I went in for a dermaplane and from the moment I walked in, I was welcomed with open arms. I sat down with the owner, Kristina and she took the time to discuss my current skincare routine, what I’m struggling with and my goals. You could tell she really has such a passion for what she does and after learning more about her story, it was clear that her mission is to help people look and feel their best. The spa itself is very clean, professional, and has a calming atmosphere so you can truly relax. My aesthetician Amber was incredible!! She is so knowledgable and friendly and was so thorough with my treatment. She wasn’t pushing products on me, she just really wanted me to have the best possible experience. I literally couldn’t believe my skin afterward - had to do a double take in the mirror lol it was GLOWING, rejuvenated and felt amazing. I was so impressed and loved it so much that I booked a facial before I left. And to top it off, since it was my first visit, I left with a gift package and handwritten thank you note! That personalized touch is so thoughtful and shows how much they truly care about their clients. Highly recommend Krido Wellness and can’t wait to go back! Thank you ladies!

Frequently asked questions
Does dermaplaning make hair grow back thicker or darker?
No. Shaving does not change the hair follicle. The hair grows back at the same rate and texture. You may notice regrowth more because the tip is blunt rather than tapered, but the hair itself is not thicker or darker.
Can I do dermaplaning if I have acne?
Not if you have active breakouts, open lesions or inflamed skin. The blade can spread bacteria and irritate the area. Wait until your skin has healed, then talk with your esthetician about timing.
How long do dermaplaning results last?
Most people see smooth, bright skin for two to four weeks. After that, dead skin cells and vellus hair return to their normal cycle. Regular treatments every four to six weeks help maintain the effect.
Is there downtime after dermaplaning?
No. You may see some redness for an hour or two, but most people go right back to their day. Avoid direct sun, harsh products and retinol for 24 to 48 hours to let your skin settle.
Will dermaplaning help with acne scars or wrinkles?
Dermaplaning removes surface buildup and fine hair. It does not address deeper concerns like acne scars, deep wrinkles or pigmentation. For those, your esthetician may recommend microneedling, chemical peels or other treatments that work below the surface.
