Microneedling Cons: What to Know Before Your First Session
Microneedling has research-backed benefits for acne scars and texture, but it also comes with downsides: healing time, discomfort, multiple sessions, cost, and a small risk of infection.
What Are the Downsides of Microneedling?
Microneedling works by creating controlled micro-injuries in the skin to stimulate collagen. Research supports it for atrophic acne scars, with moderate evidence for fine lines, texture and stretch marks. But it is not without downsides.
You will need downtime. You will need several sessions. It costs more than gentler facials. And if aftercare or sterile technique is not followed, there is a risk of infection.
Here is what you need to know before you book.
Healing Time and Redness
Your skin will be red and sensitive for several days after treatment. Most people look sunburned for 24 to 48 hours. Redness can last up to a week. You will need to skip makeup, intense workouts and sun exposure during that time.
If you have an event or photoshoot coming up, plan around your session.
Discomfort During Treatment
Microneedling involves tiny needles penetrating the skin. Most providers use a topical numbing cream, but you may still feel pressure, prickling or mild stinging. Pain tolerance varies. Some people find it uncomfortable, others tolerate it easily.
Multiple Sessions Required
One session will not give you full results. Research shows microneedling takes several sessions spaced weeks apart. For acne scars or deeper texture issues, you may need four to six treatments.
That adds up in time and cost.
Cost Over Time
Microneedling usually costs more than surface treatments like dermaplaning. At KRIDO, the Microneedling Facial is $300 per session, so a full course adds up.
Risk of Infection or Scarring
If the device is not sterile, or if you touch your face or skip aftercare, bacteria can enter the micro-wounds. Infection can lead to scarring or hyperpigmentation. This risk is higher with at-home rollers than professional treatment, but it exists either way.
Choose a licensed provider and follow aftercare instructions exactly.
Not Suitable for Active Breakouts or Certain Conditions
Microneedling is not safe if you have active acne, eczema, rosacea flare-ups, or open wounds. It is also not recommended during pregnancy or if you are on certain medications like isotretinoin. Your provider should review your health history before treatment.
Results Take Time
Collagen production is gradual. You may see some glow right after from increased circulation, but real improvement in scars, texture or fine lines builds over weeks and months. If you want instant results, microneedling will not deliver them.
Who Microneedling Is Not Right For
Microneedling may not suit you if:
- You cannot take a few days of visible redness.
- You have active acne, open sores, or a skin infection.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You are on blood thinners or have a bleeding disorder.
- You have a history of keloid scars.
- You have very sensitive skin that reacts strongly to treatments.
Talk to a licensed esthetician or medical provider about your skin and health history before booking.

Alternatives to Consider
If microneedling does not fit your goals, schedule or skin, other options may work better.
Dermaplaning removes dead surface skin and fine hair with no downtime. It smooths texture instantly and helps makeup go on more smoothly. It does not address scars or deep wrinkles, but it is gentle and fast.
Microdermabrasion is mechanical exfoliation that refines texture and brightens tone. Effects are mild and temporary, but there is no real downtime.
Chemical peels (not offered at KRIDO) use acids to exfoliate and improve tone, texture and pigmentation. Downtime varies by strength. Talk to a medical provider.
Laser resurfacing (not offered at KRIDO) is a medical procedure for deeper scars, wrinkles and sun damage. It has more downtime and cost. A dermatologist or plastic surgeon can explain options.
How KRIDO Wellness Approaches Microneedling
At KRIDO Wellness in downtown St. Petersburg, microneedling is one option in a full menu of facials built on Circadia professional skincare. Every facial includes red light therapy and lymphatic drainage massage.
The Microneedling Facial is $300. It is designed for clients targeting fine lines, acne scars, enlarged pores, uneven texture or discoloration. Over a series of treatments, many clients notice smoother, firmer, more even-looking skin with improved tone and radiance.
Your visit starts with a skin consultation. One of our licensed estheticians reviews your skin, your goals and your health history. Then they perform the treatment. Red light therapy follows, which research suggests may support collagen, and lymphatic drainage can temporarily reduce puffiness.
Each of our estheticians has 30 years of esthetics experience.
Results depend on your skin, the number of sessions, and how you care for your skin afterward. Individual results vary.
I had the absolute best experience at Krido Wellness!! I went in for a dermaplane and from the moment I walked in, I was welcomed with open arms. I sat down with the owner, Kristina and she took the time to discuss my current skincare routine, what I’m struggling with and my goals. You could tell she really has such a passion for what she does and after learning more about her story, it was clear that her mission is to help people look and feel their best. The spa itself is very clean, professional, and has a calming atmosphere so you can truly relax. My aesthetician Amber was incredible!! She is so knowledgable and friendly and was so thorough with my treatment. She wasn’t pushing products on me, she just really wanted me to have the best possible experience. I literally couldn’t believe my skin afterward - had to do a double take in the mirror lol it was GLOWING, rejuvenated and felt amazing. I was so impressed and loved it so much that I booked a facial before I left. And to top it off, since it was my first visit, I left with a gift package and handwritten thank you note! That personalized touch is so thoughtful and shows how much they truly care about their clients. Highly recommend Krido Wellness and can’t wait to go back! Thank you ladies!
