Double Chin: Causes, Options and Non-Invasive Treatments

A double chin shows up when extra fat collects under the jaw, and genetics, weight, posture and age all play a part. Here are the options to reduce it, and how KRIDO’s Cryo Face Sculpting helps many clients see a firmer jawline without needles or downtime.

What causes a double chin?

A double chin forms when fat accumulates under the chin and jawline. Genetics, weight gain, posture and age all contribute. Some people carry extra fat in this area even when they are at a healthy weight. Skin loses elasticity over time, which can make the area look looser. Poor posture (forward head position, often called tech neck) can make a double chin look more visible.

Research mostly shows exercise cannot burn fat from one chosen spot. Fat loss happens across the whole body when you are in a calorie deficit. Strengthening the muscles underneath (through jaw or neck exercises) can improve muscle tone, but it will not remove the fat layer above.

Your options to reduce a double chin

You have several paths, depending on how much change you want and whether you are willing to have a medical procedure.

Diet and exercise help if excess weight is part of the cause. Losing fat overall will reduce fat under the chin too. Neck and jaw exercises can tone the muscles, but the fat layer will stay unless you lose weight or use another method.

Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable prescription drug (deoxycholic acid) that breaks down fat cells under the chin. It requires multiple injections over several sessions, given by a medical provider. Results are gradual and the area can swell and bruise. Talk to a medical provider if you want to explore this option.

Liposuction is surgery that removes fat permanently from the treated area. It requires anesthesia, incisions, downtime and carries surgical risks. It is the most invasive option and the most permanent for fat removal.

Non-invasive cold treatments use controlled cooling to help reduce fat without needles, injections or surgery. Cryolipolysis (CoolSculpting) is FDA-cleared and supported by research showing fat layer reduction. CryoSkin, the device KRIDO uses, is a different technology with shorter sessions and no suction. Evidence for CryoSkin is limited to a small manufacturer-sponsored study, and results vary. Many clients notice a firmer, more sculpted jawline over a course of sessions.

How KRIDO approaches the double chin

KRIDO Wellness offers Cryo Face Sculpting, a needle-free treatment that uses controlled cooling, red light therapy and lymphatic drainage to help the jawline look more defined and less puffy.

Here is what happens in a session. Your esthetician applies gentle cold to the face, neck and under-chin area using a handheld wand. The cold is thought to help with circulation and temporary tightening. You then sit under red light panels. Research suggests red light may support collagen and skin repair. The session finishes with manual lymphatic drainage massage to help move fluid and reduce puffiness.

A session takes about an hour. Most clients find it comfortable and relaxing. There is no downtime. Many clients notice a lifted, firmer look after the first visit, with more visible sculpting over a course of five to ten sessions.

Results depend on your starting point, skin, age and how many sessions you complete. This is a cosmetic treatment, not a medical device, and it does not work like Kybella or liposuction. It is one option in the range of non-invasive approaches.

What clients say

I’ve tried everything over the years to deal with facial puffiness and inflammation: gua sha, ice rollers, ice water, expensive serums. Some of it helped for a minute, but nothing lasted until I did the 5-pack of Cryo Face Sculpting at Krido Wellness. It’s genuinely the first thing that’s made a real difference. My face looks less puffy and more sculpted, and my confidence has followed right along with it. Kristina, the owner, is amazing. She clearly knows this field inside and out and took the time to actually explain the process instead of just running me through the motions. Amber, who did a few sessions, took such great care of me every time. Between the two of them, I always felt like I was in good hands. If you’ve dealt with puffiness and feel like you’ve tried everything already, I’d genuinely recommend giving Krido Wellness a shot.

When Cryo Face Sculpting may not be right

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a cold sensitivity disorder like Raynaud’s, uncontrolled diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, or an active skin infection in the treatment area, this treatment may not be suitable. We review your health history at the consultation. For medical concerns or medications, talk to your doctor before booking.

Frequently asked questions

Can you lose a double chin with exercise?

Research mostly shows exercise cannot burn fat from one chosen spot. Research shows fat loss happens across the whole body when you are in a calorie deficit. Neck and jaw exercises can tone the muscles, but the fat layer above will stay unless you lose weight overall or use another method.

Does Cryo Face Sculpting permanently remove fat under the chin?

No. This is a cosmetic treatment using controlled cooling. There is no published evidence that it removes fat under the chin, permanently or otherwise. Many clients notice a firmer jawline over a course of sessions, but results vary and are not permanent like liposuction.

How many sessions does it take to see results on a double chin?

Many clients notice a lifted, firmer look after the first session, with more visible sculpting over five to ten treatments. Results depend on your starting point, skin, age and how many sessions you complete.

Is Cryo Face Sculpting FDA-approved?

No. CryoSkin is a cosmetic aesthetic technology, not a medical device, and is not FDA-approved or FDA-cleared. Cryolipolysis (CoolSculpting) is FDA-cleared, but CryoSkin is a different device and protocol.

Can posture cause a double chin?

Posture does not add fat, but forward head posture, often from looking down at screens, can make a double chin look more visible. Improving posture helps, but it will not remove the fat layer if one is present.
