Dermaplaning Hair Removal: What It Does and What to Expect

Dermaplaning removes dead skin cells and fine vellus hair (peach fuzz) from the face. Your skin looks smoother and brighter right away, and the hair does not grow back thicker or darker.

Dermaplaning removes dead skin and fine facial hair

Dermaplaning is a gentle exfoliating facial treatment that removes the top layer of dead skin cells and fine vellus hair, often called peach fuzz, from your face. The result is smooth, bright skin and better makeup application. The hair does not grow back thicker, darker or coarser. That is a myth.

Many people choose dermaplaning to smooth texture, brighten tone and help skincare products absorb better.

How dermaplaning works

An esthetician uses a sterile surgical blade held at a precise angle to gently scrape away dead cells and fine hair from the surface of your skin. The treatment is painless, quick and requires no downtime. You can return to your day right away.

The hair removed is vellus hair, which is soft, fine and usually light in color. It is structurally different from terminal hair (like eyebrows or the hair on your head). Shaving, dermaplaning or any other removal method does not change the follicle or the type of hair that grows from it. The hair grows back at the same texture, color and rate it had before.

What dermaplaning does for your skin

Removing the layer of dead cells and fine hair leaves your skin noticeably smoother. Light reflects more evenly, so your complexion looks brighter. Makeup goes on more smoothly. Serums and moisturizers may absorb more easily with fewer dead cells in the way.

Results are immediate but temporary. Your skin sheds cells naturally every day, and the hair grows back over weeks. Many people repeat it every few weeks to maintain the effect.

Will the hair grow back thicker or darker?

No. This concern comes up often, but it is not supported by evidence. Hair thickness, color and growth rate are determined by the follicle and your genetics, not by how you remove the hair. Dermaplaning, like shaving, cuts the hair at the surface. It does not touch the follicle or change how the hair grows.

What can happen is that freshly cut hair feels slightly stubbly for a day or two as it begins to grow back, because the tip is blunt instead of tapered. That sensation fades quickly as the hair lengthens.

Who dermaplaning is for

Dermaplaning suits most skin types. It works especially well if you want to smooth texture, brighten dull skin or create a smoother base for makeup. It is also a good option if you prefer a physical exfoliation method over chemical peels or enzymes.

If you have active acne, open wounds or very sensitive skin, the team will assess whether dermaplaning is right for you at your consultation.

What to expect during and after

You may feel a light scraping sensation, but it is not painful. After dermaplaning, the esthetician continues with Circadia products chosen for your skin, then red light therapy and lymphatic drainage massage.

Your skin may look slightly pink for an hour or two afterward, but there is usually no peeling or downtime. You can wear makeup the same day if you choose. Avoid direct sun and wear SPF, as freshly exfoliated skin is more sensitive to UV.

How often to get dermaplaning

We generally recommend a facial every four to six weeks, which aligns with the skin’s natural renewal cycle. If you are working on a specific concern like texture or dullness, your esthetician may recommend a slightly different schedule.

The KRIDO team will build a plan based on your skin and your goals at the consultation.
