Is a Lash Lift Safe? What You Need to Know

A lash lift uses chemical solutions to curl your natural lashes. When done by a trained esthetician with proper technique, it is generally safe, though some risks exist.

Is a Lash Lift Safe?

A lash lift uses chemical solutions similar to a perm to curl your natural lashes from the base. When performed by a trained, licensed esthetician using proper technique and high-quality products, it is generally safe. The process is gentle and non-invasive. Most people experience no issues.

That said, any treatment that applies chemicals near your eyes carries some risk. Understanding what can happen and how to minimize those risks helps you make an informed choice.

How a Lash Lift Works

A lash lift curls your natural lashes from the base, creating a lifted and lengthened look. The esthetician applies a perming solution to reshape the lashes, then sets the curl. A lash tint is often added to darken the lashes for added definition.

The entire treatment is done on closed eyes. You lie still while the solutions process. There is no pain. Most clients find it comfortable and relaxing.

Results last six to eight weeks, depending on your natural lash growth cycle and aftercare.

What Are the Risks?

Lash lifts are low-risk when done correctly, but complications can happen:

Irritation or allergic reaction. The chemical solutions can irritate the eyes or skin. Some people are allergic to the ingredients. Redness, swelling, itching or watering can occur. A patch test before your first treatment reduces this risk.

Chemical burns. If the solution touches the eyelid or gets into the eye, it can cause a burn. This is rare but serious. It happens when application is careless or when the client opens their eyes during the process.

Dryness or breakage. Repeated lash lifts, done too often or with harsh products, can dry out and weaken the lashes. Lashes may become brittle or break. Most estheticians recommend waiting six to eight weeks between treatments to let your lashes recover.

Uneven results. Poor technique can leave your lashes unevenly curled or kinked.

These risks are small when your esthetician is experienced, follows safety protocols, and uses quality products.

How to Choose a Safe Lash Lift Provider

The skill and care of your esthetician matter more than anything else. Look for:

Licensing and training. Choose a licensed esthetician with specific training in lash lifts. Ask how long they have been performing the service.

Clean, professional space. The treatment area should be clean and well organized. Tools should be sanitized.

Thorough consultation. A good esthetician asks about your health history, checks for contraindications, and explains the process and aftercare. They may offer a patch test if you have sensitive skin or allergies.

Quality products. Ask what products they use. High-quality formulas designed for the eye area are safer and gentler.

Clear communication. Your esthetician should answer your questions and make you feel comfortable. If something feels rushed or unclear, go elsewhere.

Who Should Avoid Lash Lifts?

Lash lifts are not suitable for everyone. You should skip this treatment if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You have an active eye infection, irritation or open wound near the eye.
  • You have very short or sparse lashes (there may not be enough length to lift).
  • You are prone to severe allergies or have had a reaction to similar products in the past.
  • You have had recent eye surgery or are dealing with certain eye conditions.

If you are on medications or have a health condition that affects your skin or eyes, talk to your doctor before booking.

Aftercare Keeps Your Lashes Healthy

Proper aftercare protects your results and keeps your lashes strong:

  • Avoid water, steam and makeup on your lashes for the first 24 hours.
  • Do not rub or pull on your lashes.
  • Skip waterproof mascara and oil-based makeup removers, which can weaken the curl.
  • Brush your lashes gently with a clean spoolie to keep them tidy.
  • Wait six to eight weeks before your next lash lift to give your lashes time to recover.

Amber gives you full aftercare instructions at your appointment.

Frequently asked questions

Does a lash lift hurt?

No. A lash lift is a gentle treatment done on closed eyes. Most people find it comfortable and relaxing. You may feel slight pressure as the esthetician works, but there is no pain.

Can I wear mascara after a lash lift?

Yes, but wait 24 hours after your treatment. Most people find they do not need mascara, since the lift and tint already define and darken the lashes. If you do wear mascara, avoid waterproof formulas, which can weaken the curl.

How often can I get a lash lift?

Wait six to eight weeks between lash lifts. Doing them too often can dry out and weaken your lashes. Your natural lash growth cycle determines how long results last.

What if I have sensitive eyes?

Let your esthetician know at your consultation. A patch test can check for allergic reactions. If you have very sensitive eyes or a history of reactions, a lash lift may not be right for you.

Are lash lifts safe during pregnancy?

Many estheticians do not perform lash lifts on pregnant or breastfeeding clients, and KRIDO reviews your health history at the consultation. The chemical solutions have not been studied for safety during pregnancy. Talk to your doctor first.
