Is Dermaplaning Bad for Your Face? Facts You Should Know

Dermaplaning is safe for most skin when done correctly. The hair does not grow back thicker or darker, and the treatment removes only dead surface cells.

Is Dermaplaning Safe?

Dermaplaning is not bad for your face when performed by a trained professional. It is a gentle physical exfoliation that removes dead skin cells and fine vellus hair (peach fuzz) from the surface of your skin. The treatment does not damage healthy skin, change how your hair grows, or cause irritation in most people.

The most common concern people have is whether the hair will grow back thicker or darker. It will not. Shaving or dermaplaning does not change the hair follicle itself, so the texture, color and growth rate stay exactly the same. This is well established in dermatology.

What Dermaplaning Does

Dermaplaning uses a sterile surgical blade held at a precise angle to gently scrape away the outermost layer of dead skin and fine hair. The result is immediately smoother texture, a brighter complexion, and better absorption of skincare products. Makeup also applies more evenly after treatment.

The exfoliation is superficial. It does not reach the deeper layers of skin where collagen, elastin or active skin cells live. Because of that, results are temporary. Your skin naturally sheds and renews itself over time, so the smoothness lasts a few weeks before dead cells build up again.

Who Should Avoid Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is safe for most skin types, but some people should skip it or talk to a medical provider first.

Avoid dermaplaning if you have active acne, open wounds, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea flare-ups, or a skin infection in the treatment area. The blade can spread bacteria or irritate already inflamed skin.

People with very sensitive skin, a history of keloid scars, or certain skin conditions should consult a dermatologist before booking. If you are on medications that thin the skin (like retinoids or certain acne treatments), let your esthetician know during your consultation.

Policies on pregnancy vary by studio, and KRIDO’s terms list pregnancy and breastfeeding among conditions that may make a treatment inappropriate. KRIDO Wellness reviews your full health history at every consultation to confirm the treatment is appropriate for you.

Dermaplaning at KRIDO Wellness

At KRIDO Wellness in downtown St. Petersburg, dermaplaning is offered as part of the Dermaplaning Facial. Each of our estheticians has 30 years of esthetics experience.

The facial begins with a skin consultation. Your esthetician assesses your skin type, reviews your goals, and confirms dermaplaning is a good fit. Then comes the treatment: gentle blade exfoliation, followed by a customized Circadia mask, serums and sun protection. Every facial also includes red light therapy and lymphatic drainage massage. Research suggests red light may support collagen, and lymphatic drainage can temporarily reduce puffiness.

The Dermaplaning Facial is $150. Your visit is a consultation plus the facial. Many clients notice smoother, brighter skin right away. For ongoing skin health, a facial every four to six weeks aligns with your skin’s natural renewal cycle.

I had the absolute best experience at Krido Wellness!! I went in for a dermaplane and from the moment I walked in, I was welcomed with open arms. I sat down with the owner, Kristina and she took the time to discuss my current skincare routine, what I’m struggling with and my goals. You could tell she really has such a passion for what she does and after learning more about her story, it was clear that her mission is to help people look and feel their best. The spa itself is very clean, professional, and has a calming atmosphere so you can truly relax. My aesthetician Amber was incredible!! She is so knowledgable and friendly and was so thorough with my treatment. She wasn’t pushing products on me, she just really wanted me to have the best possible experience. I literally couldn’t believe my skin afterward - had to do a double take in the mirror lol it was GLOWING, rejuvenated and felt amazing.

What a great experience! This was my first facial ever. Being a guy I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was welcomed by Kristina and Amber. Very nice and professional. They both went over their services and did a great job explaining what everything meant. As for the facial. It was amazing. Super relaxing. Did a skin test to be able to tell me what I could be doing to help promote healthy skin and prevent aging. Super knowledgeable. The different gels felt great they even said I had pretty good skin. Who would have thought. Then to top it off I got a little preview of cryo therapy to help shape my face and body. Very cool tech. Overall 10 out of 10. I’d say I’m glowing

Other Exfoliation Options

Dermaplaning is one of several ways to exfoliate your skin. Here is how it compares to other common treatments:

  • Dermaplaning: physical exfoliation with a blade, removes hair and dead cells, immediate smoothness, no downtime.
  • Microdermabrasion: mechanical exfoliation using fine crystals or a diamond tip, smooths texture and tone, effects are mild and temporary.
  • Chemical peels: acids dissolve dead skin, can address pigmentation and texture at varying depths depending on the formula, some peeling or redness afterward.
  • Microneedling: tiny needles create controlled micro-injuries to stimulate collagen, targets acne scars, fine lines and texture, requires a series of sessions.

Each option suits different goals. KRIDO Wellness offers dermaplaning, microdermabrasion and microneedling facials. Your esthetician will help you choose the best fit during your consultation.

What Happens During Your Visit

Your first visit starts with a consultation. You will complete a short intake form covering your skin history, current routine, medications and any sensitivities. Your esthetician assesses your skin, listens to your goals, and confirms which facial is right for you.

The Dermaplaning Facial takes place in a calm, private treatment room. You relax while your esthetician cleanses your skin, performs the blade exfoliation, applies a customized Circadia mask and serums, and finishes with red light therapy and gentle lymphatic drainage massage. There is no pain, no downtime, and no redness for most clients. Many clients leave with smoother, brighter skin, and you can return to your day immediately.

KRIDO Wellness is located at IMAGE Studios in downtown St. Petersburg, at 11 7th St N, Suite 220. Free three-hour parking is available right in front on 7th Street North. The studio serves St. Petersburg, Gulfport, South Pasadena, St Pete Beach, Treasure Island and the surrounding Pinellas communities. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 9 AM to 6 PM, by appointment.

Is Dermaplaning Worth It?

Dermaplaning is worth considering if you want immediately smoother skin, a brighter complexion, and better product absorption without downtime. It is especially helpful before events or as part of a regular skincare routine.

The treatment is not permanent. Dead skin cells and hair will return as your skin naturally renews itself, so results last a few weeks. Many clients schedule dermaplaning facials monthly or every few weeks to maintain the smoothness and glow.

If your main concern is deep acne scars, wrinkles or pigmentation, other treatments like microneedling or chemical peels may offer more targeted results. Your esthetician will guide you toward the most effective option during your consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Does dermaplaning make hair grow back thicker or darker?

No. Dermaplaning and shaving do not change the hair follicle, so texture, color and growth rate stay the same. This is well established in dermatology. The hair that grows back is the same hair as before, though the blunt tip can feel slightly different as it grows.

Can dermaplaning damage my skin?

Dermaplaning does not damage healthy skin when performed by a trained professional. It removes only dead surface cells and fine hair. People with active acne, open wounds, eczema, psoriasis or rosacea flare-ups should avoid it until their skin heals.

How often should I get dermaplaning?

We generally recommend a facial every four to six weeks, which aligns with the skin’s natural renewal cycle. Your esthetician will recommend a schedule based on your skin type and goals during your consultation.

Is there any downtime after dermaplaning?

No. There is no downtime for most clients. Your skin may look slightly pink right after treatment, but that fades quickly. You can return to your normal routine immediately, including makeup application.

What is included in the Dermaplaning Facial at KRIDO?

The Dermaplaning Facial includes a skin consultation, gentle blade exfoliation, a customized Circadia mask, serums, sun protection, red light therapy and lymphatic drainage massage. Your visit is a consultation plus the facial, which is $150.
