Permanent Eyeliner Aftercare and Healing Day by Day

Permanent eyeliner is swollen and dark for a day or two, flakes lightly in the first week, and settles at about four to six weeks. Keep the area clean and avoid eye makeup while it heals.

Permanent Eyeliner Aftercare in Brief

After permanent eyeliner, expect swelling and a darker, thicker looking line for a day or two, light flaking through the first week, and settled color at about four to six weeks. While it heals, keep the area clean and lightly protected as your artist instructs, and avoid eye makeup, contact lenses, swimming, steam and rubbing your eyes.

Your artist gives you written aftercare for your eyes. Follow it first. The guide below covers what most aftercare instructions agree on.

Days 1 to 2: Swelling and a Bold Line

Eyelids swell easily, so some puffiness is common, often most noticeable on the first morning. The liner looks darker and wider than the final result.

  • Use a clean, wrapped cold pack gently on closed eyes to ease swelling.
  • Sleep with your head slightly raised on a fresh pillowcase.
  • Wear glasses instead of contact lenses.
  • Keep your hands away from your eyes.

Days 3 to 7: Light Flaking

The line feels dry and may flake in tiny pieces. It can also look thinner or lighter as it flakes. Let the flakes come off on their own. Rubbing or picking can pull pigment out and leave gaps.

Days 7 to 14: Lighter Than Expected

Once flaking stops, the liner often looks lighter or patchy. New skin forms over the pigment and looks cloudy at first. This is normal and the color usually comes back gradually.

What to Avoid While It Heals

For about ten to fourteen days, or as your artist advises:

  • Eye makeup, including mascara, liner and shadow. Use new products when you start again.
  • Contact lenses for the first several days.
  • Swimming pools, the ocean, hot tubs, saunas and steam rooms.
  • Workouts that make you sweat heavily.
  • Lash curlers, lash lifts and lash tints.
  • Direct sun on the eye area. Sunglasses help.
  • Eye creams, retinoids and acids close to the lash line.

Weeks 4 to 6: Settled Liner and Touch Up

At about four to six weeks you can judge the healed result. The line is softer than day one, and some spots may have held less pigment. That is common on the thin, moving skin of the eyelid, and it is what the touch up is for.

At KRIDO most clients have one main session and a touch up five to six weeks later. Read more about it in permanent eyeliner touch up.

When to Call Your Artist

Contact your artist or a medical provider if swelling gets worse after day three, your eyes become very red or painful, you notice discharge or pus, your vision changes, or you develop a fever.
